About the Place
Wong Chiew Restaurant 皇潮餐室 is a humble yet enduring culinary spot located at 19 Sembawang Rd, Singapore. Renowned for its traditional zi char and dim sum offerings, this eatery has stood the test of time, drawing a steady flow of locals who appreciate its generous portions and familiar flavors.
The menu is extensive, boasting classic dishes such as the celebrated Chee Chiong fan, curry fishhead, and a variety of dim sum delights. The Chee Chiong fan, in particular, is a standout—rich, fragrant, and deeply satisfying, it embodies the essence of traditional home-style cooking. Meanwhile, the signature curry fishhead offers a robust blend of spices, though freshness and portion size appear to vary, demanding some scrutiny.
Seating options include a comfortable air-conditioned area and an open-air space. Based on guests’ experiences, the air-conditioned section is preferable, providing respite from the tropical heat and preventing unwanted encounters with local birds—a charming yet sometimes intrusive presence in the outdoor area.
Wong Chiew’s Lo Hei Yu Sheng deserves special mention, especially during festive occasions like Chinese New Year. The generous serving, enough to share among ten, features a good balance of yusheng vegetables and crunchy crackers. While the use of imitation abalone is noted, the overall value and communal spirit elevate this dish.
The Kampung Chicken, served in a rustic bucket, offers a novel presentation and satisfying taste profile. Vegetables with trio eggs present a slightly soupy texture that differentiates this restaurant from typical zi char joints, inviting curiosity and appreciation for subtle variations.
Service at Wong Chiew is described as fluctuating but acceptable, contributing to a casual dining atmosphere where food remains the star. Parking can be challenging due to limited space, but ample open parking is available nearby.
In all, Wong Chiew Restaurant 皇潮餐室 delivers a nostalgic and hearty dining experience. It caters well to those seeking traditional Singaporean comfort food with ample portions and familiar tastes, enhanced by a relaxed setting that invites repeated visits.
“ Been here many time as this stall is open for many many years. Now then rem to review Food standard I think maintained. Personally really like the Chee Chiong fan and curry fishhead Service wise is average sometime good sometime not so good but mostly ok. The restaurant has open air area and a Aircon area separate one. I normally sit in the Aircon section. Parking wise have a big open parking space near the park area so have to walk a bit. Update: toilet is ok. As previously I wrote not so clean Tried Claypot chicken not nice as the meat really too hard. ”
“ Food isn’t amazing, ordered duck noodles, char siew roasted pork rice and some dim sum. Prefer the rice over noodles. Duck is a bit too tough, depending on the parts but I like the roasted pork. Take note that there’s an aircon area so don’t just sit at the stall there. I took the outdoor seat and it’s not good at all, there are a lot of birds and chickens so when ppl left, the birds came and eat the leftovers. Dim sum also took a while to arrive. ”
“ Came with friends on the fourth day of Chinese New Year, and we had dinner there together. The Lo Hei Yu Sheng serving was big. Do take note that it consists of imitation abalone slices, but we can't complain as the serving was really big. It can serve about 10 pax. The yusheng vegetables were abundant, with two packs of crackers. It was value for money at $33.80nett. The other dishes were good as well, especially the curry fish head, cereal prawns, and salted egg sotong. The fish maw soup was tasty as well. Herbal chicken and trio eggs spinach can be better. There is no service charge and GST applicable, hence it was a really affordable meal. We were seated at the air-conditioned dining area a few doors away, and it was very conducive and quiet enough for our gathering. We will consider to go again. Service was great as well. The staff were friendly and attentive. Parking is available across the road at Hong Heng Mansion. ”
“ Good place to eat some traditional zhe char foods, tim sum and yong tau hu. However, when I were there, the curry fish head was not fresh! and very small. For the same price I could eat one which is much bigger and fresh at Tampines Street 12. Nonetheless it's raining and the aftermath of the rain created a refreshing atmosphere. It's extremely difficult to find parking at this place. Overall, I wouldn't take the trouble just to eat at this place because not one single strong factor would pull me there! ”
“ A cozy tze char place with an extensive menu. We were privileged to sit in the aircon room. The portion of most dishes are generous, and most of them are tasty. I find the Kampung Chicken that comes served in a bucket most delicious. The veggie with trio egg is very soupy, unlike the ones we had in other tze char places, which I find quite interesting. Not a big fan of the char siew roasted meat though. Will be good if the siew bah skin is crisper. I think I will visit again as they offered a variety of dishes. ”
